Description: Women have played a fundamental role in the conservation, defence and restoration of the planet. Past and present struggles for climate and environmental justice have been, in significant proportion, women’s struggles. At the same time, women often face the worst consequences of the impacts of environmental degradation and climate change, which are expressed in many ways: new burdens of care work, feminisation of poverty, worse conditions to ensure a dignified life, less resilience, and new forms of violence.

In addition to the impacts of environmental degradation and climate change, there are significant barriers to guaranteeing women’s participation in community and public spaces where decisions are made about the use, control, and management of ecosystems and the impacts these have on their lives and the lives of their families and communities. Many of the debates on the energy transition are taking place without the participation of the women who live in the places where energy is produced.

The inclusion of women, with their differences and situated contexts, is indispensable when promoting just transition scenarios that advance towards the transformation of an energy matrix that is respectful of the environment, responds to the urgency of the climate crisis and also respects human rights and women’s rights.
